A raw pine resin, which is a cheap, renewable and easily obtainable forest resource, was used to impregnate two different fast-growing solid woods (Eucalyptus grandis Hill Maiden and Pinus elliottii Engelm) and in situ polymerized to improve their hygroscopic, chemical, morphological, mechanical, and thermogravimetric properties. Biodegradation resistance against subterranean termites and white-rot fungus was also addressed. The treatment yielded changes in colorimetric properties, dimensional stability and surface hydrophobicity. Compared to its respective untreated wood, the treated pine one presented increases within 40-50 % in ASE, whereas the treated eucalyptus wood showed negative values around -15 % in this same comparison. Increases in MOE (70 %) and MOR (50 %) were obtained for the pine wood, whereas the same properties were unaffected for the eucalyptus wood. Thermal and biological properties of both woods were also positively affected. These results were associated with the solidified raw pine resin inside the wood structure, which was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and SEM images, especially for the pine due to its large and long tracheids, as well as its lignin content and overall composition.

Due to its transferability, soil has been commonly used as evidence in criminal investigations. In this work, urban soil samples taken from five parks are subject of analysis. Infrared spectroscopy was used as experimental technique. Using this technique, a total number of 80 samples of urban soils were examined. The infrared spectra were properly pre‐processed and were further used for development of classification models based on supervised self‐organizing maps. In order to perform the variable selection and the optimization of the supervised self‐organizing maps in automated manner, genetic algorithms were employed. Using this approach, for three locations with our models, we are able to successfully predict all samples used for external validation, while for the remaining two locations, 96% of the samples, used for external validation, were successfully classified by the developed models. In addition to this, the developed models were used for examination of influence of the weather and the seasonal changes on the composition of the soil. For this purpose, 3 years after the initial soil samples were collected, additional 12 samples were analyzed. All these samples were correctly classified by the previously developed model.

Tire Classification by Elemental Signatures Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Tire evidence is a form of trace evidence that is often overlooked in today's forensics, while frequently found at crime or accident scenes, usually in the form of skid marks. The pattern of the tire skid mark has been used before to link a tire or car to a scene, but the widespread use of anti-lock braking systems makes this an almost impossible and abandoned route of analysis. With this is mind, using the chemical profile of a tire has potential to link a car or tire back to a scene in which its trace material is found. This study shows the successful use of the elemental profile of tire rubber to classify thirty-two different samples by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) combined with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). A classification accuracy close to 99% shows the ever-growing use of LIBS as a technique of choice for forensic analysis of tire rubber, opening the path for its use as a forensic evidence.
