On the performance of Van den Berg's three-stage algorithm with different choices of variational basis functions

Abstract: An investigation is conducted on /he convergence rate of three members of uan den Berg's three-stage algorithm corresponding to three different choices of fiariational basis functions. Particular atfention is paid to the behavior of these methods when very high accuracy is required. It is shown that this leads to total breakdown for the three-stage version of the well-known conjugate-gradient FFT (CGFFT), whereas stabilityis achieued for other members. 0 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
