On the Performance of Relay Aided Millimeter Wave Networks

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the potential benefits of deploying relays in outdoor millimeter-wave (mmWave) networks. We study the coverage probability from sources to a destination for such systems aided by relays. The sources and the relays are modeled as independent homogeneous poisson point processes (PPPs). We present a relay modeling technique for mmWave networks considering blockages and compute the density of active relays that aid the transmission. Two relay selection techniques are discussed, namely… Show more

“…Since the inter-site distance is short, it would be convenient to allow the APs to connect to each other [30]; they would automatically discover and establish the backhaul links. If multiple hops [29,31] on wireless AP to AP links are possible, only a fraction of the APs have to be connected to the core network via a fiber-optic cable, the rest of the APs would act as relay [32] nodes, thereby greatly reducing deployment cost. A multi-hop backhaul network can be used both outdoors and indoors.…”

“…It has been shown via simulations in [14] that the error due to such an approximation (LOS step model) is generally small in dense mmWave networks, which also motivates the use of this first-order approximation of the LOS probability function which simplifies the dense network analysis. As shown in [14, Fig.…”

“…In this regard, thinning with respect to fading is considered in [35] and [34], while thinning considering blockages is analyzed in [14]. In this paper, we leverage the results from [14], [34] and incorporate the effects of EH and blockages. The characterization of HCPP models via the Laplace Functional and probability generating functionals is quite difficult to analyze and hasn't been properly done yet.…”
