The signal quality in high-bandwidth free space optical (FSO) systems deteriorates due to atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. Employing techniques such as adaptive transmission and relay selection (RS) can mitigate their effects. This paper analyzes the performance of a dual-hop decode-and-forward multi-relay FSO system with an adaptive M-ary phase shift keying scheme. This analysis is based on the recently proposed Fisher–Snedecor F channel model and considers the impact of pointing errors. We propose two partial relay selection schemes based on the source-to-relay or relay-to-destination channel state information to reduce the complexity of the optimal relay selection scheme. In this investigation, we derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability, modulation level selection probability, and spectral efficiency (SE) and compare the performance of the proposed RS schemes under balanced and unbalanced link cases. We observe an improvement in the SE with an increase in the number of modulation levels and the number of relays. Moreover, it is noted that the performance of the system can be restricted by the quality of either the source-to-relay or the relay-to-destination link, even if the quality of the other link is perfect. Finally, the outcomes obtained through the derived expressions are validated using Monte Carlo simulations.

Space-air-ground integrated (SAGI) communication networks have been envisioned as one of the pillars of the next generation communications (6 G). This type of networks are expected to offer fairness and high quality of services in various scenarios where traditional terrestrial communication systems cannot efficiently support due to inherent limitations, e.g., limited coverage areas. In this paper, a distributed transmission scheme is proposed in a SAGI communication network that utilizes free-space-optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) links. More specifically, a set of N high altitude platform systems are cooperatively transmit the received signal to the ground station, using the decode-and-forward relaying protocol. For this system, generic analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) have been derived that take into consideration the impact of turbulence, pointing errors, and atmospheric attenuation (for the FSO links) as well as the impact of composite fading (for the RF links). Moreover, asymptotic closed-form expressions for the OP are also presented, which are used to extract useful insights for the system under consideration. The numerical evaluated results that are illustrated reveal the impact of various system and channel models parameters on the system’s performance. From these results, it is shown that the proposed scheme outperforms a pure FSO-based relaying scheme, which has been used as a benchmark, under different environmental conditions.

Diversity and combining is one of the robust techniques to mitigate multi-path fading in RF links and turbulence-induced scintillation in FSO links. This article evaluates the effect of different diversity and combining techniques on outage and BER performance of decode and forward RF-FSO link. We have utilized diversity and combining techniques over source to relay RF link and/or relay to destination FSO link. The selection combining, transmit antenna selection, maximal ratio combining, and maximum ratio transmission schemes are considered. The Monte-Carlo simulation results of outage probability and bit error rate are compared by considering different parameters affecting link quality like the strength of atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, FSO link detection scheme, RF link fading strength, diversity order, etc. It is found that configurations like SIMO-SISO, MISO-SISO, SISO-SIMO, and SISO-MISO, where diversity is applied in either source to relay link or relay to destination link, are improving the overall link performance provided that diversity is applied at the link experiencing stronger fading compared to another link. The link configurations SIMO-MISO or MISO-SIMO also improve the link performance and it can achieve BER of 10−5 at less than 15 dB SNR in favourable link conditions.
