On the Performance of Device-to-Device Communication: a Distance-based Analysis

Abstract: Allowing a Device-to-Device (D2D) communication mode in a cellular network is a feature that might improve the system performance due to a better (re)use of radio resources and a reduced congestion when several users located at the same area want to communicate with each other. The design of an efficient D2D communication mode with minimal interference to the cellular network is a key problem for future communication systems. In this work, we study the impact of the distance between communicating and interferi… Show more

“…In Figure 5(a) we show the sum rate Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the D2D and cellular modes. As expected, see [6], the cellular mode has better performance than D2D mode when we consider a large number of position combinations. In this analysis, we find that the D2D mode outperforms the cellular mode in terms of sum rate in almost 30% of the cases.…”

“…Our aim is to investigate the influence of the uplink power control on D2D communication in three different situations. A more detailed study about the key distances in D2D communication can be found in [6]. The positions of the devices in a coordinate system centered at the BS1's position are given in the Table II.…”

“…The two aforementioned regions are defined as: Considering this, Figure 2 illustrates these two regions, where the dark areas represent the areas of interest for each region. It is worth mentioning that the above values chosen for R i and R o have been defined based on previously performed experimental observations [12], [13].…”

“…To understand the impact of user locations within the cell on the system performance, a distance-based study for specific scenarios in which D2D communications can increase the overall system capacity is addressed in [3], [4]. Results show that the use of D2D communications may provide considerable performance gains, but strongly depends on the distance among communicating and interfering devices.…”
