On the Performance and Optimization of HAPS Assisted Dual-Hop Hybrid RF/FSO System

Abstract: In this paper, we derive accurate outage probability and bit error rate expressions for a high altitude platform station (HAPS) assisted terrestrial communication system. In particular, HAPS is deployed as a relay node to assist two ground stations for data transmission. Each ground station-to-HAPS communication link works on a hybrid radio frequency (RF) and free space optics (FSO) mode. Selection combining is performed at the HAPS and the destination ground station to select either RF or FSO link based on th… Show more

“…and bandwidth allocation scheme to maximize the number of satisfied users while guaranteeing total bandwidth, backhaul capacity, minimum rate, and altitude constraints. A high-altitude platform station-assisted terrestrial SA-MBN where the wireless connection to ground station works on RF and FSO bands was proposed in [246]. Additionally, the authors developed a power allocation scheme based on geometric programming to minimize the outage probability under transmit power budgets.…”

“…In the context of resource allocation in MBNs, the application of matching theory will witness a shift from the most widely used one-to-one and many-to-one matching as well as canonical matching [201], [201], [224], [246], [274]- [277] to many-to-many matching, matching with externalities, and matching with dynamics. This is due to the presence of multi-homing devices that enable both BSs/APs and users to have multiple simultaneous connections, the mobile nature of users and satellites, and the unique constraints associated with the different frequency bands.…”

“…where γ th and γth are the defined thresholds ensuring the backhaul connectivity. Such thresholds can also be considered for outage probability and probability of fade [82]. With manual or semi-automated network management in such a complicated vertical network, its capabilities will be limited, the resources will be wasted, and its operational costs will increase significantly.…”

“…Proper radio wave propagation is also needed for good wireless communication facilities for machine-to-machine communication [2], Internet of Things communication [2], and wireless sensor network infrastructure [3]. Many innovative communication techniques, such as high-altitude platform stations [4], low-altitude platform stations [5], unmanned aerial vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles-assisted communication protocols development got researcher's attention for improvising the outdoor backhaul links that suffer from environmental disturbances or mismatching problems in heterogeneous mediums [6]. Researchers are working on enhancing system components with higher frequency bands [7], with advancements in communication protocols for future communication system advancements.…”
