On the origin of the faint-end of the red sequence in high-density environments

Abstract: With the advent of the next generation wide-field cameras it became possible to survey in an unbiased mode galaxies spanning a variety of local densities, from the core of rich clusters, to compact and loose groups, down to filaments and voids. The sensitivity reached by these instruments allowed to extend the observation to dwarf galaxies, the most "fragile" objects in the universe. At the same time models and simulations have been tailored to quantify the different effects of the environment on the evolution… Show more

“…As summarised in Boselli & Gavazzi (2014), these are now available only in optical bands (Sandage et al 1985, photographic B-band;Trentham & Hodgkin 2002, B-band;Rines & Geller 2008, r-band;Lieder et al (2012), V-and I-bands).…”

“…Dwarf systems are of particular interest in the study of the effects of the environment on galaxy evolution since they are fragile objects easily perturbed because of their shallow potential well (e.g. Boselli & Gavazzi 2014). …”

“…Certainly, there are some well known examples of tidal stripping, such as the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Ibata et al 1994) which has an enormous stellar stream spanning the entire sky that reveals its interaction history with the Milky Way (Ibata et al 2001;Majewski et al 2003 and references therein). There are also numerous examples of galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping due to interactions in cluster-like environments (e.g., NGC4522 in the Virgo cluster, Vollmer et al 2000; Peg DIG in the Local Group, McConnachie et al 2007b; see also Boselli & Gavazzi 2014). But the proximity of a large galaxy can introduce more subtle effects in the properties of the smaller satellite.…”

“…This loss of gas stops the active star formation of the galaxies and produces a decrease in their stellar surface brightness (see e.g. Boselli & Gavazzi 2014;Rodríguez Del Pino et al 2014). In particular, the end of the star formation in the outer galaxy regions would produce a fading of these regions, producing shorter length scales of the discs of the galaxies.…”

“…Arnaboldi et al 2002;Aguerri et al 2005b;Gerhard et al 2005;Castro-Rodriguéz et al 2009). It is still a matter of debate which of these physical mechanisms drives the evolution of dwarf galaxies in high-density environments (see Boselli & Gavazzi 2014, for a recent review).…”
