On the origin of the open-circuit voltage of polymer–fullerene solar cells

Abstract: The increasing amount of research on solution-processable, organic donor-acceptor bulk heterojunction photovoltaic systems, based on blends of conjugated polymers and fullerenes has resulted in devices with an overall power-conversion efficiency of 6%. For the best devices, absorbed photon-to-electron quantum efficiencies approaching 100% have been shown. Besides the produced current, the overall efficiency depends critically on the generated photovoltage. Therefore, understanding and optimization of the open-… Show more

“…28 The alternative model for the CT absorption proposes that the shape arises from a strong electron−phonon coupling, with a line-shape given by Marcus theory. 29 Analysis of the shape and the associated emission band leads to a CT energy of 1.14 eV for P3HT:PCBM. Earlier data by Vandewal et al 30 positioned E GI at a significantly lower energy than more recent data.…”

“…64 Evidence for such intermediate charge transfer states has been presented for a number of other blend systems including PCPDTBT:PCBM. 65 The appearance of CT states is in general a function of blend composition and therefore of microstructure. In the case of PCPDTBT:PCBM, the yield of long-lived mobile carriers originating from this intermediate state is found to be sensitive to the blend ratio, with a maximum at the ratio which yields the highest PCE in devices.…”

“…38 Both techniques demonstrated photocurrent signal below the bandgap of pristine materials, indicating absorption from the CT state. [37][38][39][40][41] Photoluminescence Photon absorption by the polymer (fullerene) generates excitons, which transfer electrons to the fullerene and leave holes in the polymer (or the other way around). The electrons in the fullerene might radiatively recombine with the holes in the polymer at the donor/acceptor interfaces, generating additional photoluminescence (PL) which is absent in the PL spectra of the individual components.…”
