On the Optimal Synthesis of Ring Symmetric Shaped Patterns by Means of Uniformly Spaced Planar Arrays

Abstract: Abstract-By taking inspiration from [1], a synthesis strategy is proposed for the case of planar arrays and ring shaped patterns which does not require the exploitation of global optimization procedures. In particular, the approach is able to determine a priori (that is, without solving the overall design problem) whether the given power pattern design constraints can be fulfilled or not, and, in the adfirmative case, to determine the needed excitation coefficients in a fast deterministic manner. Although the … Show more

“…Recently, relevant contributions have been proposed in the literature. Those works use some deterministic approaches for synthesizing uniform and sparse planar antenna arrays in order to obtain a desirable isoflux radiation in MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) and GEO satellites [8,9]. Thus, the aurhors' objective has been focused on synthesizing antenna arrays to satisfy isoflux radiation in a compact size with fewer device excitations in order to improve the performance of the antenna system.…”

“…As a consequence of convexity, the globally optimal solution of the problem is unique and can be identified without making resort to global optimization techniques. Also, by using suitable finite-dimensional expansions of the source or proper regularization techniques, these results and approaches can be extended to the synthesis of continuous aperture sources [21][22][23]. Finally, the density taper techniques [10,16] can be applied to each achieved aperture field distribution in order to generate a set of array locations corresponding to the desired radiation pattern and identifiable as a point in a multidimensional space whose coordinates are the locations themselves (see Fig.…”

“…Finally, all these results concerning the synthesis of shaped beams can be extended to all cases wherein the source can be reduced to one-dimensional polynomials, which include planar arrays with factorable patterns, planar arrays with peculiar symmetries [14], as well as circularly symmetric sources [15], [16].…”
