The concentrations of magnetically active ions in clusters occurring in a diamagnetic two-dimensional host lattice are statistically calculated. This is done for an initial, total active ion concentration ranging from 1 to 100 niol?; and for all geometrically possible cluster types from singlets to septets, 449 in all. The model taken into consideration is a real Z(M)X,-type crystal, where it i s presumed that a direct exchange intra-layer is the only important interaction (no superexchange). These calculations are made in order to provide a basis for understanding the nature of the concentration-sensitive optical absorption bands and magnetic behaviour of some crystals containing transition metal ions.
