On the Neutral Gas Content and Environment of NGC 3109 and the Antlia Dwarf Galaxy

Abstract: As part of a continuing survey of nearby galaxies, we have mapped the neutral gas content of the low surface brightness Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 3109 and its environment, including the Antlia dwarf galaxy, at unprecedented velocity resolution and brightness sensitivity. The H I mass of NGC 3109 is measured to be 3.8^0.5 ] 108A substantial warp in the disk of NGC 3109 is detected in the H I M _ . emission image in the form of an extended low surface brightness feature. We report a positive detection in H I of… Show more

“…The dIrr/dSph galaxy Antlia is a close (!40 kpc) companion of the more massive, gas-rich dIrr NGC 3109 (van den Bergh 1999b). Antlia appears to have had a close encounter with NGC 3109 about 1 Gyr ago, which caused a warp in the disk of NGC 3109 (Barnes & de Blok 2001). It now has a low H i mass of $7 Â 10 5 M .…”

“…In this regard, the natural comparison to NGC 6822 is NGC 3109, a galaxy of the same morphological type. In both galaxies, de Blok & Walter (2000) and Barnes & de Blok (2001) have recently mapped extensive HI envelopes.…”

“…The peri-Galactic passage was not only the time when the tidal strain of the MW was maximum on each individual member of the association, but also the epoch when the members were most closely packed together, maximizing the effects and the probability of dwarf-to-dwarf interactions. It seems likely that the tidal tails of Antlia and Sex A, as well as the warp and substructures observed in NGC 3109 (Hidalgo et al 2008;Barnes & de Blok 2001;Dalcanton et al 2009) were produced during that relatively short epoch of multiple interactions.…”
