On the Microstructure, Strength, Fracture, and Tribological Properties of Iron-Based MMCs with Addition of Mixed Carbide Nanoparticulates

Abstract: In this paper, the features of the strength, fractures, and tribological behavior of metal-matrix composites based on the FeGr1 material are discussed. To improve the material properties, a mixture of SiC, Al2O3 and C nanoparticulates have been added to an iron-based matrix. The simplex lattice design method and hardness, compression, and bending tests were used to determine the mechanical properties. Scanning electron microscopy was applied for fracture features analysis. Different fracture types, mainly tran… Show more

“…The as-built specimen shows an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1245 MPa and a strain of 9.49% ( Figure 5 a), thereby suggesting the best tensile properties. Only a cleavage fracture (yellow triangle in Figure 6 a) is observed, indicating a typical brittle fracture [ 33 , 34 ]. The hardness of T5003 is similar to that of the as-built specimen; however, the UTS is 1126 MPa, which is 90% of that of the as-built specimen.…”

“…Wear rate increases with the enhancement of both the parameters. This is because of melting and formation of hardened layer on the contact surfaces of AMMC's and wear testing tool [69][70][71].…”

“…It is suggested aluminium alloy reinforced with particulates like Al 2 O 3 , SiC, and BA exhibits improved tensile strength, durability, and tribological properties (6) . According to the investigations, the percentage ratio of reinforcement influences composites' mechanical performance and wear behaviour.…”
