“…The potent progestin ENT was administered concomitantly to reduce the likelihood of prostaglandin-induced abortion. Previous work had shown that ENT did not interfere with the RIA of serum progesterone [34,351. Injection of the PGF 2 .…”

“…In the pregnant heifer neither decrease in progesterone nor increase in the prostaglandin metabolite level was seen. Exogenous PGF2a has been shown to be luteolytic in many species; in the rat (Pharriss 8c Wyngarden 1969;Bishop 8c Flack 1973;Strauss 8c Stambaugh 1973;Fuchs et al 1974), guinea pig (Blatchley 8c Donovan 1969;Chaichareon et al 1974), hamster (Johnston 8c Hunter 1970;Labhsetwar 1971;Gutknecht et al 1971;Giannina et al 1974), rabbit (Gutknecht et al 1969;Pharriss 1970;Abel et al 1973;Bruce 8c Hillier 1974), gerbil (Chaichareon et al 1974), sheep (McCracken et al 1970; Barrett et al 1971;Chamley et al 1972;Douglas 8c Ginther 1973;Goding 1974), goat , swine (Gleeson 1974;Hallford et al 1974), horse (Douglas 8c Ginther 1972Noden et al 1974;Oxender et al 1974) and cattle (Rowson et al 1972;Lauderdale 1972;Louis et al 1972Louis et al , 1973Shelton 1973;Wishart 1973;King 8c Robertsson 1974;Lauderdale 1974;Lauderdale et al 1974;Oxender et al 1974;Roche 1974;Edqvist et al 1975;Hafs et al 1975).…”

“…This may be explained by the short period between treatment and removal of CL for the present study. Giannina, Butler, Sawyer & Steinetz (1973) showed that administration of PGF2ce to 5-day pregnant hamsters caused a dramatic decrease in progesterone concentration with apparently no damage to the CL and Koering, Kirton & Thor (1973) also showed that following the administration of PGF2ct to pregnant rabbits progestin concentration decreased before any significant changes in cellular structure were observed. The present observations support those of Deane et al (1966) and Bjersing et al (1970), who showed conclusively that significant fine cytological changes in sheep CL were not evident before the 15th or 16th day of the cycle, even though involutionary changes were detectable histochemically as early as Day 12 or 13 of the cycle.…”
