On the Late Pleistocene ocean geochemistry and circulation

Abstract: A box model of the atmosphere and ocean was developed to investigate how geochemical distributions extant during the late Pleistocene may have come about. The model simulates the regional distribution of calcium carbonate dissolution as well as the chemical oceanography and atmospheric CO2, •5•3C, and radiocarbon. If the downward biological flux of particulate carbon increases by a factor of 2 to 3 in the Antarctic and if this increase is combined with a relative increase of the Atlantic sector Antarctic Botto… Show more

“…Second, we consider the south-north advection of the AASW. From volume transport of 21.5 Sv of AASW to the north and a surface-water depth of 120 m (Keir, 1988) follows a transport velocity to the north of roughly 0.55 km d À1 at 501S. In the 35 days between the first and the last transect of our expedition the surface water has traveled 20 km to the north.…”

“…There are two possible strategies, outlined in Table 2. One is to release the ocean from iron limitation, [Broecker, 1982b], is weakened by the effects of CaCO 3 compensation [Keir, 1988;Sigman et al, 1998]. One proposal for increasing ocean pH has been called the "coral reef hypothesis" [Berger and Kelt, 1984; Opdyke and Walker, 1992].…”

“…The southeastern Atlantic plays an important role in global conveyor circulation, as it represents a junction of globally important water masses, including NADW, CPDW and warm surface waters of the Agulhas Current (Keir, 1988), which can be traced by clay mineralogical parameters. These water masses form part of global conveyor circulation, responsible for interhemispheric heat transfer and ocean ventilation (Broecker and Denton, 1989;Rahmstorf, 1995;Berger and Wefer, 1996).…”
