On the Internal Polarity of the Golgi Apparatus with Special Regard to Its Relationship to GERL

Abstract: The authors emphasized that from the cytochemical standpoint the Golgi apparatus has an internal polarity and that GERL is a part of this organelle.

“…Acid phosphatase activity is also found in Golgi cisternae by using P-glycerophosphate as a substrate. Acid phosphatase activity in Golgi cisternae has been demonstrated in many other cell types (Goldfisher, 1982;Fujita and Swano, 1983). It is clear from these studies and previous observations by Enders and Wimsatt (1971) that the contents of most uncoated endocytic vesicles pass through the lysosomal compartment.…”

“…Nonetheless, our results suggest that the apparatus is organized in "cis-trans" terms much like that of other neurons, in which acid phosphatase and TPPase show their strongest cytochemical activities in distinct, although adjacent, sacs near the trans Golgi face (e.g., Novikoff et al, 1971;Novikoff and Novikoff, 1977). However, as in several other cases (cf., Broadwell, 1980;Fujita and Sawano, 1983;Hand and Region near the apex of the cell body in a rod cell from a postembedding immunocytochemical preparation with the anti-p38 antibodies; 5 nm gold particles are clustered over a region of small vesicles and tubules (arrow). Note the absence of labeling over the outer segment (0s) and the mitochondria (M).…”
