On the in vitro antioxidative properties of melatonin

Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine possible in vitro antioxidant effects of melatonin. Thus, the total in vitro antioxidant activity of melatonin was studied using a thiocyanate method. Additionally, the reducing power, the superoxide anion scavenging activity and free radical scavenging activity of melatonin were determined. Melatonin exhibited potent antioxidant activity in a linoleic acid emulsion system. The antioxidant activity increased with increasing concentrations of melatonin (50-500 microg). The 50… Show more

“…Postischemic endothelium is the main source for the free radicals 56 . It is known that the most impairing effect of free oxygen radicals is peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the cell membrane [57][58][59] . Free oxygen radicals cause and start the lipid peroxidation.…”

“…Also, they can affect the cellular proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and other potential susceptible substances. This process results eventually with excess production of free radicals and organ dysfunction, also ROS can lead to many diseases [11][12][13][14] . They are mainly responsible for I/R injury.…”

“…Furthermore, previous studies indicate that cocoa powder extract and polyphenols prolong the lag time of LDL oxidation (Vinson et al 2006;Osakabe et al 2002). Oxidative stress is often defined as an intracellular redox imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants (Gulcin et al 2002(Gulcin et al , 2003. Prevention of oxidative damage is important for health care, because oxidative stress is thought to be involved in the development of many of the above mentioned diseases (Lu and Foo 2000).…”
