Plastic pollution is a pressing global issue, necessitating a focus on consumer behavior to curb this problem at its source. To effectively promote sustainable practices, communication strategies that employ future visions have gained attention. This study examines the effects of a narrative video intervention depicting an optimistic future vision concerning single-use plastic bag consumption in South Africa, compared to a representation of the prevailing status quo. Using a preregistered within-subject design, we assess the psychological and emotional responses to two scenarios of which one is illustrating adaptive behaviors toward reduced plastic bag usage, and the other showcasing current consumption patterns. Parametric analyses revealed a shift in emotional states, characterized by a greater experience of positive emotions and a reduced experience of negative emotions following the exposure to the optimistic future scenario video, as compared to the status quo video. Moreover, engagement with the optimistic future scenario was associated with higher levels of perceived behavioral control and behavioral intentions. No significant changes were found regarding sense of responsibility. These findings point to the potential of optimistic future visions to influence individuals at psychological and emotional levels. This renders optimistic future vision communication as an effective tool for sustainable behavior change, particularly in relation to the sustainable use of plastic shopping bags.

hile the tech-giants such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook thrive at unprecedented corporate scales, society still struggles with upscaling. Significantly, this overview was completed when world records were set for planetary warmth. These records, and the violent storms the oppressive heat has spawned, signal that unabated average global thermal increases may threaten humanity if protracted. The world awaits large-scale innovations in producing and using energy to maintain human sustainability. While well exceeding the corporate IT scale, this challenge is highly significant to the IT Industry, which increasingly depends on a massively growing energy appetite. IT innovations at the edge may eventually fuel innovation at scale. MOTHER NATURE IS NOT ALWAYS FORGIVINGMother Nature operates at scale. It is up to humans to become equally resourceful in countering natural scaling events that threaten human survival. Increased thermal activity on a global level represents such a primary threat driven by scale. As is frequently the case, building to scale starts with understanding and accepting the established realities. The archeological record attests to the global ecosystem changes resulting from long-term fluctuating shifts in climate. Significantly, the threatening effects of more rapidly than everwarming atmospheric conditions, regardless of causal factors, have become ingrained and primarily accepted in mainstream science. 1 This cultural problem must be resolved at scale among interoperable solutions that favor human survival. It requires profound acceptance of cross-disciplinary knowledge of the phenomenology underlying atmospheric and oceanic warming before scalable solutions can be brought to bear. Seemingly, for these global threats, the same principles of knowing which data are essential and how they behave at scale apply. Such was the case that relieved the threat posed by COVID-19 through applied bottom-up genetic engineering that led to successful vaccines.
