On the Future(s) of Energy Communities in the German Energy Transition: A Derivation of Transformation Pathways

Abstract: Active participation of citizens in the sustainable energy transition—particularly in energy communities—is explicitly desired by the European Union and considered vital for a successful transformation of Europe’s energy system. Currently, energy communities, i.e., citizen-led groups generating energy from renewable sources can be found across Europe, though current numbers are small. However, it is expected that the majority of EU households will be active in some form in the generation of energy by 2050. In … Show more

“…A major motivation was to realize the energy transition together with the citizens (Seyfang et al, 2013). Another was the drive to carry out innovative and qualitative projects, which would not happen without the TEC (Broska et al, 2022). Other motivations confirmed in this study was to creating locally added value, keeping money in the region (Walker et al, 2010;van Der Schoor et al, 2016) and creating a stronger bond within the community and between the members (Soeiro and Dias, 2020).…”

“…L. H. Broska et al also draw attention to the role of a social approach to the energy transition process through the prism of citizen participation, through the creation of energy communities. These authors signal the fact that these solutions can play an important role in the state's energy system in the future [64], which can be considered as a result of long-term public education. In this regard, H. Lucas et al point to the need to empower consumers to actively participate in the creation and co-creation of the state's energy system [60].…”

“…Research on energy transition mostly focused on the concept and connotations of energy transition [20,21], as well as the influencing factors [11,22], transition path [23,24], and sustainability of energy transition [25,26]. The World Energy Council (WEC) defines energy transition as a fundamental change in the energy structure caused by an increase in the share of renewable energy and the phasing out of fossil fuels.…”
