The wide spectrum of applications of wireless sensor networks in real time monitoring of disaster prone areas makes it very promising and reliable. The present work focuses on communication link establishment for the first 72 hours just after disaster, highlighting the capability of wireless sensor network especially in disaster prone area. The complete network consisting of 8 wireless nodes with integrated Xbee as a sensor to establish a communication link in between the pursuit team and trapped people. The network is deployed in Dunga Valley of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, a seismic zone with a population of more than 1 lakh. The nodes are capable of recognizing the traveler's location whenever they are passing by the disaster prone areas. The nodes gather RSSI values along with the estimated distances of the traveler (having anchor node) from the pursuit team (having pursuit node). The system has proven its validity by tracking the trapped people in communication deprived area in Dunga Valley by doing mock drill several times. The paper reports the design of wireless network as well as deployment aspects of the nodes in such disaster prone areas.

Abstract-Recent natural disasters have revealed that emergency networks presently cannot disseminate the necessary disaster information, making it difficult to deploy and coordinate relief operations. These disasters have reinforced the knowledge that telecommunication networks constitute a critical infrastructure of our society, and the urgency in establishing protection mechanisms against disaster-based disruptions.Hence, it is important to have emergency networks able to maintain sustainable communication in disaster areas. Moreover, the network architecture should be designed so that network connectivity is maintained among nodes outside of the impacted area, while ensuring that services for costumers not in the affected area suffer minimal impact.As a first step towards achieving disaster resilience, the RE-CODIS project was formed, and its Working Group 1 members conducted a comprehensive literature survey on "strategies for communication networks to protect against large-scale natural disasters," which is summarized in this article.Index Terms-vulnerability, end-to-end resilience, natural disasters, disaster-based disruptions.

Resumo-As redes de computadores possuem além das aplicações conhecidas no mundo civil, diversas aplicações em ambientes militares de conflito e situações de defesa civil. Este trabalho investiga a minimização de potência para redes ad-hoc em um cenário de comando e controle (C2).É proposto um algoritmo para a minimização do consumo de energia dos nós de uma rede de C2, através da divisão da rede em clusters, minimizando o consumo total de energia.
