On the flexibility of the gold–thiolate interface: racemization of the Au40(SR)24 cluster

Abstract: The two enantiomers of the Au40(2-PET)24 cluster were collected using HPLC and analyzed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, UV-vis- and CD-spectroscopy. The flexibility of the cluster surface allows racemization of the intrinsically chiral cluster at elevated temperatures (80-130 °C) which was monitored following the optical activity. The determined activation energy (25 kcal mol(-1)) lies in the range of previously reported values for Au38 nanoclusters whereas the activation entropy deviates significantly from th… Show more

“…The Au-S vibrational modes have been identified below 400 cm −1 . [37,74] The vibrations of the metal core have been predicted below 200 cm −1 , Au-S-C bending in a range of 200-215 cm −1 , and a Au-S stretching mode at 242 cm −1 . [75] Experimental counterpart vibrational analysis on small Au NPs [3,75] have shown Raman bands at 300 and 270 cm −1 assigned to Au-S stretching mode for the reduced and the neutral form, respectively.…”

“…In these structures, the small gold core is protected by mono and dimeric protecting units called “staple motifs” such as linear RS‐Au(I)‐SR and V‐shaped RS‐Au(I)‐SR‐Au(I)‐SR. Many distinct thiolate‐stabilized gold nanoclusters have been synthesized and identified . Chiral thiolate‐stabilized gold NPs have gained significant interest over recent years.…”

“…Intrinsically chiral gold clusters include the Au 28 (SR) 20 , Au 38 (SR) 24 , Au 40 (SR) 24 , and Au 102 (SR) 44 systems . The CD spectra of their enantiomers are perfect mirror images.…”
