On the enhancement of training session performance via attention for single-frequency/multi-commands based steady state auditory evoked potential BCI

Abstract: To solve the eye fatigue problem on using the well known steady state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) system, the steady state auditory evoked potential (SSAEP) becomes one of the promising BCI modalities. However, SSAEP-based BCI system still suffers from the low accuracy. To increase the accuracy, in this paper, we propose the new training method to enhance the SSAEP training session. The training process is enhanced by making the users control their attention levels simu… Show more

“…In order to study the attention EEG, researchers designed a large number of induction experiments, KLimesch et al concluded that the power change of the alpha wave can reflect the attention features after studying a large amount of data [34]. Punsawad and Wongsawait proposed a new training method to enhance the training process of steady state auditory evoked potentials (SSAEP) via detecting the frequency of auditory stimulation of participants while controlling their attention level, proving that attention indicators can be detected from the frontal area [35]. Wang et al used the Go/No-go paradigm to measure the neural activities and recorded event-related potentials (ERP) [36].…”

“…For example, in clinical applications, ASSRs are thought to reflect decreased abilities to generate responses in the gamma frequency band, reflecting impairments of cognitive processing [7,8]. Similarly, in BCI applications, the changes induced by attentional modulations in ASSRs are practically used to control devices [9].…”

“…For motor imagery BCI we concentrate on motor cortex area in the middle of the head towards the edge of frontal lobe. [48], somatosensory (touch) SSEP [49] or auditory SSEP [50]. Depending on the sort of the stimulation, SSEP appear in certain brain areas which corresponds to the nature of stimulation.…”
