On the Energy Efficiency-Spectral Efficiency Trade-Off of Distributed MIMO Systems

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, the trade-off between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) is analyzed for both the uplink and downlink of the distributed multiple-input multiple-output (DMIMO) system over the Rayleigh fading channel while considering different types of power consumption models (PCMs). A novel tight closed-form approximation of the DMIMO EE-SE trade-off is presented and a detailed analysis is provided for the scenario with practical antenna configurations. Furthermore, generic and accur… Show more

“…Subsequent to these works, the achievable rate has become the dominant choice to measure the quality of a communication system. Further studies that considered this approach are [22], and [23] for OFDMA systems, [24]- [26] for MIMO systems, [27]- [29] for relay-assisted communications, [30] and [31] for cognitive communications. -Throughput.…”

“…In that work, the authors also analyze the impact of considering a realistic PCM, while they derive closedform upper bounds for the EE-SE trade-off. Moreover, in [16], distributed MIMO and co-located MIMO are compared in terms of the EE-SE trade-off. The authors also consider different types of PCMs and show that distributed MIMO is more energy efficient than co-located MIMO for use at the cell edge.…”

“…The AEE of a communication system is the average amount of bits that can be delivered per joule consumed to do so, i.e. the ratio of the average ergodic rate to the total power consumed [17], [18]. The ergodic rate and the power consumed by a typical UT depend on its association, which could be with either a macro cell or small cell.…”
