On the Energy and Spectral Efficiency Tradeoff in Massive MIMO-Enabled HetNets With Capacity-Constrained Backhaul Links

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a general framework to study the tradeoff between energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) in massive MIMO enabled HetNets while ensuring proportional rate fairness among users and taking into account the backhaul capacity constraint. We aim at jointly optimizing user association, spectrum allocation, power coordination, and the number of activated antennas, which is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem maximizing EE and SE simultaneously. With the help of w… Show more

“…The blockage parameter, β, is 1/β = 141.4 meters [35]. We assume coefficients of energy efficiency of power amplifier as 1 = 2 = 3 = 0.38 [23], load independent circuit power as ρ 1 = 4 W, ∆ 1 = 4.8, ∆ 2 = 0, ∆ 3 = 2.08 × 10 −8 , Λ 1 = 1, Λ 2 = 9.5 × 10 −8 and Λ 3 = 6.25 × 10 −8 [29]. Load independent circuit power for small cell tiers is taken as ρ 2 = 13.6 W and ρ 3 = 13.6 W, respectively [37].…”

“…It is assumed that the MBSs are provided with multiple antennas forming an array while the small cell BSs, legitimate users and eavesdroppers are equipped with a single omnidirectional antenna. Massive MIMO is adopted at the macro cells such that each MBS has N antennas that can communicate simultaneously with U users (N U ≥ 1) with equal power distribution among all users [23].…”

“…6 There are many importance on the deployment of femtocells in regard to the frequency reuse for mitigating the interferences between the different tiers so as to enhance the network performance. 7 An OFDMA (both Long-Term Evolution and WiMAX) is the great amount of dynamically assigned time and frequency slots. 8,9 This significant growth in the modulability of resource allotment is both an advantage and a drawback.…”
