Electric cycling is one of the major damage sources in lithium-ion batteries and extensive work has been produced to understand and to slow down this phenomenon. The damage is related to the insertion and extraction of lithium ions in the active material. These processes cause mechanical stresses which in turn generate crack propagation, material loss and pulverization of the active material. In this work, the principles of diffusion induced stress theory are applied to predict concentration and stress field in the active material particles. Coupled and uncoupled models are derived, depending on whether the effect of hydrostatic stress on concentration is considered or neglected. The analytical solution of the coupled model is proposed in this work, in addition to the analytical solution of the uncoupled model already described in the literature. The analytical solution is a faster and simpler way to deal with the problem which otherwise should be solved in a numerical way with finite difference method or a finite element model. The results of the coupled and uncoupled models for three different state of charge levels are compared assuming the physical parameters of anode and cathode active material. Finally, the effects of tensile and compressive stress are analysed.

In this study, stress generation at the electrode in Li-ion batteries was studied using a two-dimensional cell-scale model that includes multiple active particles during galvanostatic discharge. Numerical simulations were performed using an electrochemical-mechanical coupled model to elucidate the simultaneous effects of particle size and location, lithium intercalation kinetics and binder constraints on the stress. The simulation results showed that when different sizes of particle are considered in the electrode, the small particles were discharged more than the large particles, resulting in higher level of stress in the smaller particles. In addition, the closer the particles were located to the separator, the larger the stresses that were developed in those particles. Therefore, a layered structure, where the particle size gradually increases as the distance from the particles to the separator decreases, can alleviate stress on the electrode. When binder constraints were considered for the electrode particles, the stress was increased at the anode and alleviated at the cathode upon discharge. This indicates that the effect of mechanical constraints on stress generation in the particles differs in the lithiation and delithiation process.

This article investigates the lithiation of low-expansion electrode particles with concentration-dependent properties. The conventional electrochemical coupled stress equations do not take into account concentration dependency, especially for particles with a low volume of expansion, as they are assumed to have no impact on the lithium-ion (Li-ion) migration. However, considerable changes are observed in the present study when this factor is included. The Liion concentration gradient is observed to decrease with stiffening and increase with softening in an electrode particle. The stresses at the center of the particle increase with stiffening and reduce with the softening. It is observed that the effect of concentration-dependent elastic modulus on the concentration gradient of lithium ions at the surface of the particle is more prominent at higher charging rates. The stresses in the electrode particle are observed to increase in proportion to an increase in the charging rate up to a critical limit beyond which its magnitude reduces.
