In this paper, we investigate the performance of hard switching‐based radio frequency/visible light communication (RF/VLC) downlink system, for indoor wireless communication system. The proposed system exploits the advantages of VLC and RF system, ie, high data rate transmission by VLC and pervasive coverage by RF. The indoor RF link is considered to be Nakagami‐m fading channel while the VLC links are subjected to statistical channel model based on the uniformly distributed end user position. In this paper, we study the performance of hybrid RF/VLC system in terms of outage probability, average bit error rate, ergodic capacity, packet error rate, and throughput. Furthermore, we compare the results of proposed RF/VLC system with stand‐alone VLC system to prove its effectiveness. The results prove that, for lower values of average signal‐to‐noise ratio, the proposed system outperforms the stand‐alone VLC system.

Summary This paper proposes a spectral efficiency improvement technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) links. The proposed technique provides an efficient utilization of the mmWave link capacity. This technique is applied in three cases the single‐input single‐output (SISO), single‐input multiple‐output (SIMO) with the maximal ratio combining and with the equal gain combining. The M‐ary quadrature amplitude modulation scheme is used in our work. The power series expansion is used for deriving closed‐form expressions for bit error rate (BER) performances in all studied cases. The BER closed‐form expressions are confirmed by the numerical solution of the integral equations. The simulation results show that a high spectral efficiency can be accomplished by the proposed technique. As well as the derived expressions closely match with the numerical solution of integration expressions at different values of modulations order the Rician factor. For instance, the spectral efficiency gain achievement is 8 at signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) equals 34 dB in the case of SISO system whereas in the case of SIMO system, the same gain is achieved at SNR equals 24 dB. As well as the BER performance is enhanced from 1.188 × 10−4, 7.112 × 10−4, 4.164 × 10−3, and 3.286 × 10−2 to 8.717 × 10−16, 1.119 × 10−12, 1.308 × 10−9, and 4.905 × 10−6 for M = 4, 16, 64, and 256, respectively, at SNR equals 30 dB.

Free space optics (FSO) technology has been used recently in many applications due to its various advantages such as high bandwidth, easy deployment, high security, free installation license and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, this type of communication is vulnerable to meteorological conditions such as rain, haze and fog which significantly degrade the system's efficiency. To enhance the effectiveness of the FSO systems, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation based on coherent detection constitutes a promising technique for achieving high spectral efficiency and long‐distance FSO links with the characteristics of low‐cost implementation and simple design. This work aims to investigate the performance of FSO communication links on image transmission under the presence of atmospheric attenuations. A comparative study has been made using QPSK modulation scheme and on–off‐keying (OOK) modulation scheme to estimate the maximum range that was used to recover an RGB transmitted image over an FSO link under different meteorological weathers. The obtained results clearly show that the quality of the received image has degraded significantly during transmission through free space yielding to limit the propagation range. Moreover, the proposed FSO communication system performs well when using QPSK modulation rather than OOK modulation in different environmental conditions. Thus, to improve the quality of the received image under adverse fog weather condition, high power and small beam divergence angle have been suggested to increase system's performance. The proposed solution increases the communication range of the FSO link by 230 m and 100 m for moderate and heavy fog, respectively.
