On the effects of banks’ equity ownership on credit markets

Cet article explore les réponses détaillées à une enquête annuelle réalisée auprès de grandes entreprises européennes quant à la gestion de leur pool bancaire. Nous y montrons que les relations banque-entreprise varient selon au moins deux dimensions: verticalement, via une hiérarchie explicite entre les banques au sein du pool bancaire et horizontalement, les banques assurant des fonctions différenciées au sein d’un même pool. Nos résultats suggèrent ensuite que les aspects non financiers de la relation banque-entreprise ont un impact plus important sur la longévité de cette relation que la tarification des services bancaires en elle-même. La compétitivité des prix apparaît par ailleurs jouer un rôle asymétrique: Les banques offrant les services les plus onéreux (taux d’intérêt, frais, etc.) sont plus susceptibles d’être exclues d’un pool bancaire, tandis que les nouvelles banques ne semblent pas avoir été sélectionnées pour l’attractivité relatives de leurs prix. Enfin, nous mettons en avant l’importance de certains services, comme la gestion de trésorerie ou les services liés au marché des capitaux d’emprunt, dans le maintien d’une relation banque-entreprise pérenne.
