On the effect of tribo‐corrosion on reciprocating scratch behaviors of phosphate laser glass

Abstract: Using a reciprocating ball‐on‐flat tribometer, the friction and wear behaviors of phosphate laser (PL) glass were investigated in dry air and liquid water to reveal the effect of tribo‐corrosion on the reciprocating scratch behaviors of PL glass. In this regard, material removal and (sub)surface cracking of PL glass were studied by comparing the absence/presence of water under reciprocating scratch conditions. It was found that regardless of applied load conditions, material removal volume in water was higher … Show more

“…In addition, at room temperature (about 25 ℃), the reaction between water molecules and phosphate glass can be intensified 8 Friction | https://mc03.manuscriptcentral.com/friction in the presence of tensile stress and frictional shearstress. Here, the reaction process can be regarded as stress-corrosion [22] and tribo-corrosion [34]. Stress enhanced hydrolysis and leaching are considered the main mechanisms, which can be described using Reactions (5) and (6), where M represents the metal ion in the glass network: P-O-P + H2O = P-OH + OH-P…”

“…The dynamics of such sliding contacts have been analyzed with mechanically loaded hard indenters scratching the surface of glasses. The effects of dynamic contact damage on glasses to understand controlled material removal in polishing and grinding processes were investigated in previous studies , in which various parameters have been observed to influence the fracture and wear of glasses during scratching, including the geometry of indenters, applied normal load, sliding velocity, and sliding friction, to name a few. The influences of normal load and sliding speed on the damage evolution at the surface and subsurface levels, respectively, were previously demonstrated for a diamond sphere sliding on soda lime silica glass, where the increase in sliding speed was linked with subsurface damage due to shearing effects .…”
