This exploratory study investigates the impacts of sustainable procurement (SP) practices on organizational performance by using the established scales of SP practices and organizational performances, taking Saudi Arabia as a case country. Data used in the study was collected through a questionnaire survey from procurement directors and managers. Regression and multivariate-based path analysis was performed to assess the impacts of SP practices. From the preliminary results, a significant association between combined SP practices and organizations' financial performance was found. A mediational analysis was conducted to discover the direct and indirect effects of SP practices on financial performance. There was no evidence of a significant direct impact of the summary measures of SP practices on financial performance, while the indirect impact of SP practices via organizational nonfinancial performance on financial performance was found to be statistically significant. This study contributes to SP practice literature by developing a conceptual model for the outcomes of SP practices and establishing statistically significant relationships between SP practices, organizational financial performance, and mediating factors.

Municipal Solid Waste Characterization According to Different Income Levels: A Case Study

Solid waste generation and characterization are some of the most important parameters which affect environmental sustainability. Municipal solid waste (MSW) characterization depends on social structure and income levels. This study aims to determine the variations in waste components within MSW mass by income levels and seasonal conditions following the analysis conducted on the characterization of solid wastes produced in the Kartal district of the province of Istanbul, which is the research area of this study. To this end, 1.9 tons of solid waste samples were collected to represent four different lifestyles (high, medium, and low income levels, and downtown) in the winter and summer periods, and characterization was made on these samples. In order to support waste characterization, humidity content and calorific value analyses were also conducted and various suggestions were brought towards waste management in line with the obtained findings. According to the results obtained in the study, organic waste had the highest rate of waste mass by 57.69%. Additionally, significant differences were found in municipal solid waste components (MSWC) based on income level. Average moisture content (MC) of solid waste samples was 71.1% in moisture analyses. The average of calorific (heating) value (HHV) was calculated as 2518.5 kcal·kg −1 .

We extend this literature in three directions by including the unit-based pricing system. First, we show that unit-based pricing systems are more important from a cost-minimizing point of view than the institutional mode of waste collection. In particular, the bag-based and frequency-based pricing systems are preferred. Second, dividing the cost effects between price and quantity effects, we illustrate that lower administrative costs and a smaller waste quantity are the most important drivers of cost decreases. It also shows that a disadvantage of the bag-based system is that it is not easy to price compostable waste. Third, if more general cost functions are analyzed, these estimations suggest that there are economies of scale for small municipalities.JEL classification: H31; H71; Q38.
