On the Distance and Molecular Environment of Westerlund 2 and HESS J1023-575

Abstract: The extended TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1023Ϫ575 is coincident with the massive, young stellar cluster Westerlund 2 (Wd2) and its surrounding H ii region RCW 49. On the basis of an analysis of the CO emission and 21 cm absorption along the line of sight to Wd2, it is argued that this cluster, and by assumption the TeV source as well, must be associated with a giant molecular cloud in the far side of the Carina arm with a mass of . Analysis of the spatial and velocity structure of the cloud reveals clear eviden… Show more

“…The studies of the molecular hydrogen by Dame (2007), Furukawa et al (2009) and Ohama et al (2010) show a complex environment around Westerlund 2. Two molecular clouds in the velocity ranges of [-11 : 9] km/s and [11: 21] km/s physically coincide with Westerlund 2 and and the large H ii region RCW 49.…”

“…The total mechanical luminosity (W total ) available from stellar winds in Westerlund 2 is estimated to be 3.6 × 10 51 erg (Rauw et al 2007). Observations of the molecular cloud content in the region by Dame (2007) shows a complex and rich environment and triggered high resolution (1.5 ) observations with the Nanten 2 4-m sub-mm telescope. The latter observations resolved massive molecular clouds at ∼16 km s −1 and ∼4 km s −1 (6.5 and 5.2 kpc), that were previously reported by Dame (2007), as well as a second component at ∼-4 km s −1 which appears to be coincident with a region of ongoing star formation.…”

“…Investigating the possible relationship between molecular gas and high-energy emission can be quite fruitful, as a recent study of the Westerlund 2 TeV source illustrates (Dame 2007). The situation for the Cygnus source is much more complicated owing to a great deal of confusion along this line of sight (see, e.g., Fig.…”
