On the Diamagnetic Susceptibility Enhancement of Disordered or Highly Compensated Crystalline Semiconductors

Abstract

The problem of the magnetic susceptibility x of disordered semiconductors has b.ecome very up-to-date. Recently, White and Anderson (1) discussed some possibilities of comprehending the diamagnetic susceptibility enhancement observed in amorphous semiconductors (cf. references in (1)). They argue that the potentially dominant cause of this enhancement i s a decrease in the paramagnetic interband contribution. However, such a contribution need not be considered in a polycrystalline semiconductor, say, composed of fine crystallites (grains) o r a compensated crystalline semiconductor with randomly inhomogeneous concentration profiles.Here we may assume a picture of bands fluctuating randomly in space (Fig. 1)
