On the determination of single-crystal plasticity parameters by diffraction: optimization of a polycrystalline plasticity model using a genetic algorithm

Abstract: A genetic algorithm was implemented in order to optimize the selection of parameters within a polycrystalline plasticity model. Previously collected experimental data from tests performed on textured Zircaloy-2, consisting of macroscopic flow curves, lattice strains and Lankford coefficients, all measured in both tension and compression in three principle directions of a plate, were reproduced by the model. The results obtained were found to be comparable to prior attempts to optimize the model parameters manu… Show more

“…The small atomic radii of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon atoms allow them to adopt octahedral interstitial sites in the HCP metals [56] and these have very pronounced effects even at low [18,36,50,56,58] and Zr [4,5,35,45,59] at room temperature.…”

“…Notably, artificial neural networks have been used extensively in determining the mechanical properties and the kinetics of the phase transformation of titanium [7][8][9][10][11][12][13], nickel [14] and steel [15][16][17][18][19][20]. Genetic algorithm has also been used broadly in materials science [21][22][23][24] to optimize parameters involved in a phenomenon [25,26] and also microstructural evolutions [27,28]. In some cases, GA has been integrated with ANN to optimize the results of a developed neural network model [29][30][31].…”

“…However, experimentally local activation of basal slip has been reported near twins and kink bands, 4 cracks, 2,5 and free surfaces. [5][6][7][8] Further, many recent works show that including basal slip is necessary to give good agreement between modeling predictions and experimental results, for either intergranular stress development, [9][10][11][12] or texture evolution. 13,14 Therefore any solid microstructural evidence of basal slip operation in zirconium alloys will be invaluable for validating the input parameters of existing and future modeling works.…”
