Snow and Snow (1947) have approached this problem experimentally, and have concluded from their work on Lupinus that at least in this species traces do not determine the position of leaves at the apex. Gunckel and Wetmore (1946b) suggest that if the traces are not a "controlling factor in leaf arrangement" then at least they must play a correlative role.…”
