On the Deposition of Volatiles and Semivolatiles from Cigarette Smoke Aerosols:  Relative Rates of Transfer of Nicotine and Ammonia from Particles to the Gas Phase

Abstract: The hypothesis that elevated levels of ammonia-releasing compounds in tobacco and ammonia in mainstream (MS) smoke increase the rate and amount of nicotine evaporation from the particles of MS smoke aerosol was examined by kinetic modeling and experiments with MS cigarette smoke. Computational simulation of a kinetic mechanism describing volatile loss of nicotine, ammonia, and acetic acid from an aqueous solution was used to compute the time-dependent concentration of all species in the model. Because of the h… Show more

“…Nicotine is mainly present (>99%) in the particulate phase of the MS smoke aerosol (Seeman et al, 2004), and the nicotine dose obtained from a cigarette is subject to substantial inter-and intra-individual differences in smoking behavior (Scherer et al, 2007;Lindner et al, 2011). Smoking a cigarette can be described by distinct physical processes: Puffing, mouth hold, inhalation, and exhalation (Bernstein, 2004).…”

“…59,68,69 Additional studies of partitioning between the phases would be desirable, including studies of partitioning in particles of different sizes. Studies of the environmental stability of nicotelline would also be desirable, as well as structural characterization of the N -oxide metabolites.…”

“…That metaphoric cartoon helped me choose vigor and opportunity. [28][29][30][31][32][33][34] A second set of entries ( Figure 9) are by Koji Nakanishi and Gilbert Stork, both from Columbia University, after we and other friends had enjoyed a fine dinner in Manhattan on July 16, 1997. As they were about to sign the book, I mentioned that I was shortly going to visit mutual friends at the ETH in Zürich.…”
