Abstract. Deploying IP telephony or voice over IP (VoIP) is a major and challenging task. This paper describes an analytical design and planning simulator to assess the readiness of existing IP networks for the deployment of VoIP. The analytical simulator utilizes techniques used for network flows and queueing network analysis to compute two key performance bounds for VoIP: delay and bandwidth. The simulator is GUI-based and has an interface with drag-and-drop features to easily construct any generic network topology. The simulator has an engine that automates and implements the analytical techniques. The engine determines the number of VoIP calls that can be sustained by the constructed network while satisfying VoIP QoS requirements and leaving adequate capacity for future growth. As a case study, the paper illustrates how the simulator can be utilized to assess the readiness to deploy VoIP for a typical network of a small enterprise. We have made the analytical simulator publicly available in order to improve and ease the process of VoIP deployment.

Summary Numerous research articles exist for backbone formation in wireless networks; however, they cannot be applied straightforward in cognitive radio network (CRN) due to its peculiar characteristics. Since virtual backbone has many advantages such as reduced routing overhead, dynamic maintenance, and fast convergence speed, we intend to propose a backbone formation protocol in CRN. In this paper, we propose a tree‐based backbone formation protocol along with its maintenance. Our protocol is based on non‐iterative approach, thus leading towards limited message overhead and faster convergence speed. The proposed algorithm first forms the tree by maintaining the parent‐child relationship, and second, the parent nodes are connected together to form the virtual backbone. In the end, we evaluate the performance our protocol through extensive simulations.

Software-defined networking (SDN) paradigm has become the master solver for traditional network restrictions. The fundamental concept of SDN is moving the control plane into one or more servers called controllers and confining the data plane to several forwarding network elements allowing dynamic and flexible network management. A critical challenging issue in SDN-based network architecture is the controller placement problem (CPP) that is an NPhard problem. Trends of researches try solving the CPP based on evolutionary algorithms focusing on either propagation delay or balancing the load among distributed controllers. In this paper, we have proposed a fault tolerance metaheuristic-based scheme for CPP in wireless software-defined networks, named FTMBS. The aim of our proposed FTMBS scheme is as follows: maximizing the network connectivity, maximizing the load balance among controllers, minimizing the worst-case latency between controllers and associated nodes and between controllers themselves, and maximizing the network lifetime. When dealing with a multi-objective-based scheme, a trade-off exists mainly when these multi-objective metrics compete with each other, and it will be up to the decision maker to decide on this trade-off. We have considered a network of 500 randomly distributed sensor nodes and demonstrated various simulations for different network performance metrics and concluded that three controllers are enough for such networks. For performance evaluation, we have verified our solutions to be close to Pareto optimal ones provided by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II).
