Tropical cyclone (TC) over the North Atlantic is an important extreme weather event, causing great social and economic damages to the American coastal regions. In this study, we find that the North Atlantic TC activity (genesis frequency and accumulated cyclone energy) has significant multidecadal variability, which exhibits an out‐of‐phase relationship with that over the eastern North Pacific, referring to as the inter‐basin seesaw in TC activity. By using five indicators of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) strength, we link this TC activity seesaw pattern to the AMOC and the associated North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies. Both observation and Atlantic pacemaker experiment indicate that the AMOC induces the North Atlantic sea surface temperature warming and eastern North Pacific cooling, which lead to contrasting backgrounds (vertical wind shear, maximum potential intensity, and humidity) for the TC formation and development, resulting in the seesaw pattern in TC activity. Our results provide additional evidence for the reversed relationship in TC activity between the two ocean basins and attribute this seesaw to the variations in the AMOC. More importantly, the atmospheric‐NAO‐based AMOC indicator shows a leading role in depicting the multidecadal seesaw, which has great potential in improving the decadal prediction of North Atlantic/eastern North Pacific TCs.

Consequences from a slowdown or collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could include modulations to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and development of the Pacific Meridional Overturning Circulation (PMOC). Despite potential ramifications to the global climate, our understanding of the influence of various AMOC and PMOC states on ENSO and global sea surface temperatures (SSTs) remains limited. Five multi-centennial, fully-coupled model simulations created with the Community Earth System Model were used to explore the influence of AMOC and PMOC on global SSTs and ENSO. We found that the amplitude of annual cycle SSTs across the tropical Pacific decreases and ENSO amplitude increases as a result of an AMOC shutdown, irrespective of PMOC development. However, active deep overturning circulations in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins reduce ENSO amplitude and variance of monthly SSTs globally. The underlying physical reasons for changes to global SSTs and ENSO are also discussed, with the atmospheric and oceanic mechanisms that drive changes to ENSO amplitude differing based on PMOC state. These results suggest that if climate simulations projecting AMOC weakening are realized, compounding climate impacts could occur given the far-reaching ENSO teleconnections to extreme weather and climate events. More broadly, these results provide us with insight into past geologic era climate states, when PMOC was active.

Impacts of ocean-atmosphere teleconnection patterns on the south-central United States

Recent research has linked the climate variability associated with ocean-atmosphere teleconnections to impacts rippling throughout environmental, economic, and social systems. This research reviews recent literature through 2021 in which we identify linkages among the major modes of climate variability, in the form of ocean-atmosphere teleconnections, and the impacts to temperature and precipitation of the South-Central United States (SCUSA), consisting of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. The SCUSA is an important areal focus for this analysis because it straddles the ecotone between humid and arid climates in the United States and has a growing population, diverse ecosystems, robust agricultural and other economic sectors including the potential for substantial wind and solar energy generation. Whereas a need exists to understand atmospheric variability due to the cascading impacts through ecological and social systems, our understanding is complicated by the positioning of the SCUSA between subtropical and extratropical circulation features and the influence of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the adjacent Gulf of Mexico. The Southern Oscillation (SO), Pacific-North American (PNA) pattern, North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the related Arctic Oscillation (AO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation/Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMO/AMV), and Pacific Decadal Oscillation/Pacific Decadal Variability (PDO/PDV) have been shown to be important modulators of temperature and precipitation variables at the monthly, seasonal, and interannual scales, and the intraseasonal Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in the SCUSA. By reviewing these teleconnection impacts in the region alongside updated seasonal correlation maps, this research provides more accessible and comparable results for interdisciplinary use on climate impacts beyond the atmospheric-environmental sciences.
