The increased amount of information measured by fully polarimetric SAR give additional knowledge about ground scatterers. Making the best use of the polarimetric information is crucial for target detection, amongst other applications. Several representations of the data, such as polarimetric decompositions, have been proposed to summarize the information into polarimetric features. The relation between these features with physical properties of the scatterers have been studied in depth. The different approaches to target detection proposed make use of different polarimetric features and different properties of the targets. The goal of this paper is two-fold: to give a brief review of polarimetric features usually used for target detection, and to combine them optimally for vehicle detection in open field, in large natural scenes. The study's backbone is a large airborne data-set in X-, S-, and L-bands, in which several flights following different flight tracks were performed around a controlled area with a dozen vehicles.At first, a univariate study is performed to evaluate the contrast provided by individual polarimetric features between vehicles and different types of natural covers. Then, optimal subsets of polarimetric features for distinguishing vehicles in open field from natural cover are determined using random forest classifiers. The multivariate approach yielded better detection results for all wavelengths, but brought more significant improvement as the wavelength increases. At X-band, the total received power is one of the best predictive parameter for vehicle detection, while the scattering mechanism characterization becomes more important at S-and L-bands.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an active microwave remote sensing system able to acquire high resolution images of the scattering behaviour of an observed scene. The contribution of SAR polarimetry (POLSAR) in detection and classification of objects is described and found to add valuable information compared to previous approaches. In this thesis, a new target detection/classification methodology is developed that makes novel use of the polarimetric information of the backscattered field from a target. The detector is based on a geometrical perturbation filter which correlates the target of interest with its perturbed version. Specifically, the operation is accomplished with a polarimetric coherence representing a weighted and normalised inner product between the target and its perturbed version, where the weights are extracted from the observables. The mathematical formulation is general and can be applied to any deterministic (point) target. However, in this thesis the detection is primarily focused on multiple reflections and oriented dipoles due to their extensive availability in common scenarios. An extensive validation against real data is provided exploiting different datasets. They include one airborne system: E-SAR L-band (DLR, German Aerospace Centre); and three satellite systems: ALOS-PALSAR L-band (JAXA, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency), RADARSAT-2 C-band (Canadian Space Agency) and TerraSAR-X X-band (DLR). The attained detection masks reveal significant agreement with the expected results based on the theoretical description. Additionally, a comparison with another widely used detector, the Polarimetric Whitening Filter (PWF) is presented. The methodology proposed in this thesis appears to outperform the PWF in two significant ways: 1) the detector is based on the polarimetric information rather than Surely a PhD is not the kind of task that one can accomplish without the help of a myriad of people. I am afraid that a detailed description would end up as a chronicle of the past 4 years of my life being as long as the entire thesis. It could start from my supervisor and end at the Cameo ticket boy. Therefore, considering I do not have enough time to write it nor the reader is interested in my diary, I believe there are two ways out to this problem: 1) to make the list as short as possible missing out many names; 2) to not write at all! Considering ingratitude is not amongst my favourite sins, I will attempt the first solution and try to keep the list as short as possible.
