ON THE CONCEPT OF FUTURE TIME ORIENTATION: CONSIDERATIONS OF SOME FUNCTIONs' AND MEASUREMENTs' IMPLICATIONS*

Abstract: Empirical studies have revealed contradictory results concerning future time orientation and various other factors. The lack of consensus between the concept and measurements is postulated to be the main reason for the diversity in results. It is necessary to differentiate between (a) experimentally induced future (time) orientation and future time orientation (FTO) considered as a personality trait, and (b) between dimensions of FTO and the manifestation and functional significance of these dimensions in beha… Show more

“…Time orientation was measured using the Gjesme scale [75], which is composed of 7 items, and exhibits an alpha coefficient of 0.62. The items measure future time orientation, where high scores in time orientation correspond to future time orientation, and low scores correspond to present time orientation.…”

“…Time orientation is a multi-dimensional construct [74] consisting of one's capacity to anticipate, structure, and see the future more clearly [75]. Moreover, time orientation is the customer's willingness to delay or expedite gains, such as obtaining a reward or something of value, and losses, such as giving up something of value [76].…”

“…A perspectiva temporal de futuro (PTF) refere-se justamente às crenças ou à orientação individual em relação ao futuro, tendo em conta objectivos temporalmente distantes (Bembenutty & Karabenick, 2003, 2004Carvalho, 2007Carvalho, , 2008bCarvalho & Gomes, 2009;Gjesme, 1983;Husman & Lens, 1999;Klineberg, 1968;Lessing, 1968;Simons et al, 2004,).…”

“…In other words, the further in time a perceived goal, the less it motivates action (Gjesme 1981(Gjesme , 1983Bandura 1986;Moreas and Lens 1991;Simons et al 2004). And when a person perceives a certain goal to be "very far away", this goal does not even inXuence his present actions anymore (Gjesme 1975, p. 156;Boniecki 1980, p. 174;Gjesme 1981, p. 129).…”
