A model of energy management analysis, case study of a sugar factory in Turkey

This study presents a case study of energy management in a sugar factory in Turkey. The main idea of the study is to analyse energy consumption, the quantity of material production, and figure out a suitable energy efficiency for the case study of a sugar factory subsequently. Firstly, a material production and energy consumption audit were performed for the sugar factory. Secondly, energy efficiency was calculated from the energy data. The SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) statistical software was used to ensure the accuracy of the data. The factory's energy consumption was calculated as 43,590.25 toe (tons of oil equivalent) over the last year. These results were used for CUSUM (Cumulative Sum Deviation Method) graphics. This research poses the consumption of energy, cost of energy and the relationship between energy usage and material production of sugar. The unit of energy cost was 688.22 [$/toe] for the last year. This result showed that the factory decreased the unit of energy by optimisation. The results indicated that the investigated sugar factory should pay attention to the energy management issue in order to comply with the Energy Efficiency of Turkish Law and Directives.

In a Closed Circuit Wind Tunnel, the measurement of the wind flow velocity is performed using a Pitot Tube associated with two pressure sensors. A typical instrumentation problem is, for speeds below 10 m/s (an important range for many aerodynamic tests), pressure sensors lose the capacity to provide adequate measures for the speed control of the tunnel. This work aims to relate the possible causes associated with the low precision and accuracy of the system in the mentioned range, to improve the measurement. A measurement using two sensors operating in series, i.e., in a split range is proposed, switching from one sensor to another smoothly. In the end, it is presented the identified problems with the new sensor installed, considering its dynamic and static behavior, relating them to the observed impacts regarding the chosen transition methods. Resumo: Em um Túnel de Vento de Circuito Fechado, a medição da velocidade de escoamento do vento é realizada por meio de um Tubo de Pitot associado a dois sensores de pressão. Um típico problema de instrumentação é que, para velocidades abaixo de 10 m/s (faixa importante para muitos testes aerodinâmicos) os sensores de pressão perdem a capacidade de fornecer medidas adequadas para o controle de velocidade do túnel. Este trabalho, busca relacionar as possíveis causas associadas à baixa precisão e exatidão do sistema na faixa mencionada, com o objetivo de melhorar a medição. Propõe-se uma medição utilizando dois sensores operando em série, i.e., em faixas divididas (split range), realizando-se o chaveamento entre os sensores de forma suave. Ao final, apresenta-se os problemas identificados com o novo sensor instalado, no que se refere ao seu comportamento dinâmico e estático, relacionando-os com os impactos observados referente aos métodos de transição escolhidos.
