On the benefits of increased vehicles perception to cooperative communications

Abstract: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are expected to play a vital role in increasing road safety and road efficiency in the near future. The primary feature of ITS applications is to provide road safety, which is based on IEEE-802.11p technology, by transmitting safety messages to the vehicles in the surrounding. The channel congestion is a significant challenge for the IEEE802.11p, ITS is operating on. Congestion increases the data loss and degrades the ITS performance resulting from compromising passenge… Show more

“…In contrast to the previous studies that focused on varying data rates or transmission power to reduce channel load and improve CAM transmission in the neighborhood, we propose in a previous study an alternative solution based on cooperative transmission [1], [2]. This solution keeps the data rate and transmission power unchanged.…”

“…An alternative solution involves employing additional detection techniques, such as sensors or visible light communication units, to gather information about neighboring vehicles, including their speed and position. By incorporating this extra information, vehicles can send Extended CAM messages that encompass their own speed and position and that of nearby vehicles [1], [2]. Despite Extended CAM messages containing more data than simple CAM messages, they help conserve bandwidth by avoiding the constant overhead present in each message.…”

“…The research findings in the extended sensors use case for vehicular communication highlight the importance of gathering comprehensive information about the vehicle's surrounding environment to ensure safe and accurate steering in autonomous vehicles [67], [68]. When the vehicle's onboard sensors may not provide sufficient data, information from other vehicles can be utilized to enhance the perception of the surrounding environment.…”

“…However, often the capabilities of the sensors in the vehicle cannot provide sufficient information needed to carry out the steering process. So information from other vehicles can be taken to get more comprehensive information about the vehicles surrounding environment [67], [68] as depicted in figure 6.…”
