V Coja-methylstyrene-acrylonitri1e)polymers with about 46 mole-% acrylonit.rile and 45 M < 417 were investigated by means of light-scattering in tetrahydrofurane as a solvent. The Zimm plots obtained are presented.The mean square radius of gyration, (S2), and the molar mass were plotted according to linearization procedures based in turn upon the relations a5 -a3 = Cz, a3 -1 = C'z, and a2 = 1 + Cz. As found in former investigations, the three extrapolation procedures yield different values for the unperturbed dimensions (S2),/M and the excluded volume parameter P/m,2. For each specimen the value of the second virial coefficient was calculated using in turn each extrapolation result and the corresponding h(Z) equation FKO,o, FKO,m, KY/YT, or KFSY. The equation based upon the KFSY theory yields values of the second virial coefficient which agree best with the measured data. This indicates that the unperturbed dimensions of the copol>-mer under investigation amount to (S2),/M = 17.2 . Uber das Verhalten von Styrol-Acrylnitril-Copolymeren i n L6sung. V . Die gefundenen Zimm-Diagramme werden wiedergegeben. Der quadratische Mittelwert des Tragheitsradius (S2) und die molare Masse wurden nach verschiedenen Linearisierungsverfahren aufgetragen, die auf den Glzichungen a5 -a3 = Cz, a3 -1 = C'z oder a2 = 1 + C z beruhen. Wie schon in friiheren Untersuchungen gefunden wurde, ergeben die drei iinterschiedlichen Extrapolationsverfahren verscbiedene Werte fur die ungestorten Dimensionen ( S 2 ) , / M und den Parameter des ausgeschlossenen Volumens, B/m,2. Fur jede Prohe wurde der Wert des 2. Virialkoeffizienten aus den jeweiligen Result aten der. Extrapolationsverfahren mit den hi?)-Beziehungen FKO,o, FKO,m, KY/YT und KFSY berechnet. Statistical copolyniers of styrene and acrylonitrile, covering a wide range of compositions, were synthetized by emulsion polymerization conducted to both low and high conversion. The weight-average molecular weights of the copolymers were determined by light scatteringand correlated withintrinsic viscosities measured in methyl ethyl ketone and/or dimethyl formamide solutions. The copolymers polymerized in emulsion are suggested to consist of macromolecules with long chain branching. Relative Molekiilmassen und Grenzviskositatszahlen von statistischen, in Emulsion polymerisierten Copolymeren des Styrens und AcrylnitrilsStatistische Styren-Acrylnitril-Copolymere wurdcn durch Emulsionspolymerisatioii in einem breiten Bereich der Zusammensetzung sowohl bei niedrigen als auch bei hohen Umsatzen hergestellt. Die Massenmittel der relativen Molekiilmassen der Copolymere wurden mittels Lichtstreuung ermittelt und mit den in Methylethylketon-bzw. Dimethylformamid-Losungen gemessenen Grenzviskositatszahlen in Beziehung gebracht.
