On the astronomical origin of the Hallstatt oscillation found in radiocarbon and climate records throughout the Holocene

Abstract: An oscillation with a period of about 2100–2500 years, the Hallstatt cycle, is found in cosmogenic radioisotopes (14C and 10Be) and in paleoclimate records throughout the Holocene. This oscillation is typically associated with solar variations, but its primary physical origin remains uncertain. Herein we show strong evidences for an astronomical origin of this cycle. Namely, this oscillation is coherent to a repeating pattern in the periodic revolution of the planets around the Sun: the major stable resonance … Show more

“…It has been suggested that non-radiative physical processes connected with solar activity and the "resonant" orbital motions of the moon and the planets can cast light on the otherwise incomprehensible temperature fluctuations [34,35]. In fact, the magnetic activity of the sun and, probably, also the planetary motions modulate both the solar wind and the flux of the cosmic rays and interstellar dust on the earth with the result of a modulation of the clouds coverage.…”

“…Consequently, some individuals were believed to have been committed to perform evil actions; and this belief caused different actions in the various ages: witch hunt during the famine of the 16 th century, hunting spreaders during plague epidemic events, etc. [26]. A similar behavior can be checked from historical documents of the ancient peoples: the calamities were generally ascribed to the whims or anger of Gods.…”

“…In other words, "look for the guilty one" once again. But people are not enough educated to discriminate between the anthropogenic and the natural causes of climate changes [26]. They do not properly consider that natural phenomena have driven the evolution of the climate along the whole history of our planet.…”

“…These cycles, which are identified in various Holocene records (e.g. Rimbu et al, 2004), characterize also solar activity 270 and are referred to as the Hallstatt and Eddy cycle, respectively and could have an astronomical origin (Scafetta et al, 2016). The enhanced blocking activity during low solar activity over eastern Europe, which play an important role in increasing the wave breaking activity and extreme precipitation in the Alpine region (Barton et al, 2016), could, therefore, be mechanistically associated with lower solar activity.…”
