Abstract:The available bandwidth is a crucial metric of networks performance which is applied in congestion control, route selection, traffic analysis and QoS management. PathChirp is a well-known tool to estimate available bandwidth based on an approach of self-induced congestion, which exponentially increases the rate of probing packets in each packet train. But the inappropriate gaps of probing rates often result in a large deviation of estimated available bandwidth. In order to solve this problem, we propose HybChirp, an active probing tool which uses linearly spaced probing packets (lin-chirps) and exponentially spaced probing packets (exp-chirps) in combination. HybChirp improves PathChirp by adopting the hybrid of lin-chirps and exp-chirps, while inherits the advantages of PathChirp such as the short convergence time and low overhead. The NS-2 simulation results have shown that HybChirp outperforms PathChirp and Pathload in terms of accuracy, overhead, convergence time and adaptivity.

Abstract. The available bandwidth of a network path impacts the performance of many applications, such as VoIP calls, video streaming and P2P content distribution systems. Several tools for bandwidth estimation have been proposed in the last years but there is still uncertainty in their accuracy and efficiency under different network conditions. Although a number of experimental evaluations have been carried out in order to compare some of these methods, a comprehensive evaluation of all the existing active tools for available bandwidth estimation is still missing. This article introduces an empirical comparison of most of the active estimation tools actually implemented and freely available nowadays. Abing, ASSOLO, DietTopp, IGI, pathChirp, Pathload, PTR, Spruce and Yaz have been compared in a controlled environment and in presence of different sources of cross-traffic. The performance of each tool has been investigated in terms of accuracy, time and traffic injected into the network to perform an estimation.

Abstract. In wireless networks, available bandwidth estimation is challenging because wireless channels are used by multiple users or applications concurrently. In this study, we propose a passive measurement scheme to estimate the available bandwidth in 802.12 wireless networks based on the combination and modification of two existing schemes, Distributed Lagrange Interpolation Based Available Bandwidth Estimation (DLI-ABE) and Accurate Passive Bandwidth Estimation (APBE). The proposed scheme uses the channel busy state, which is affected by transmitting or receiving processes caused by carrier sensing. Therefore, the sender and the receiver node should be synchronized using various states that can be affected by other nodes. Moreover, the proposed scheme was developed with the involvement of relevant calculation of possible overhead caused by control messaging that occurs in the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and collision probability caused by data flow from hidden nodes. The result showed that the proposed scheme can estimate the available bandwidth of wireless networks more accurately than DLI-ABE and APBE.
