Advanced methodology for in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy MR spectroscopy (MRS) is one of the oldest MR techniques for clinical use, with its applications expanding to in vivo studies over four decades ago. However, MRS has yet to be translated into routine application in non-specialized institutions. One of the major reasons for the slow transfer to clinical routine has been a lack of consensus in the MRS community about the best practical methodology and its appropriate use. In recent years, initiatives from the ISMRM Spectroscopy Study Group (https://groups.ismrm.org/mr-spectroscopy/) have targeted consensus for basic clinical MRS and yielded two papers. The first consensus paper, in Radiology, 1 focused on areas of neuro-MRS and some basic information on the MRS methodology involved. The second consensus paper 2 aimed at recommendations from the MRS community for the methodology to be used in basic clinical MRS as well as some recommendations for the manufacturers of MR scanners and other MR hardware.
