On the Achievable Rate of a Hybrid PLC/VLC/RF Communication System

Abstract: The increased demands for indoor wireless data services with the limited available radio frequency (RF) spectrum are motivating researchers to investigate alternative technologies to augment the existing RF networks. Utilizing the visible light spectrum by exploiting visible light communication (VLC) has shown strong potential to augment RF networks in indoor scenarios. The ubiquity of the power-line network makes it an attractive choice as a communication medium between the data sources and the VLC transmitte… Show more

“…The cascaded PLC‐VLC channel analysis was introduced in the work of Ndjiongue et al The aim is to achieve a cost‐effective transmission in a hybrid PLC‐VLC channel by not performing any demodulation in the bridge to analyse the influence of the cascaded linear channels on the orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing data symbol when it passes through the hybrid PLC‐VLC channel. Many other findings on cascaded systems involving PLC or VLC can be found in previous works . The noise scenario shown in Figure is proposed neglecting the effect of PLC noise on the VLC channel.…”

“…The robust beam forming approach has been used in [25] to calculate the WSR for a multi-cell massive MIMO downlink system. In [4], the authors have investigated achievable data rate of a hybrid system comprising of cascaded PLC/VLC system in coexistence with the RF system for a constrained transmit power. In this study, the authors have developed an algorithm that optimally divides the maximum allocated power among all three communication links such that the achievable data rate can be maximized [4].…”

“…The complementary optical and radio networks would not only enhance the redundancy, an efficient use of spectrum would possibly reduce the spectrum congestion or overloading while communicating on both network simultaneously. Indoor applications of hybrid networks have been predominantly studied [34,35], as in [34] an indoor application of hybrid opticalradio network is considered to transmit the indoor traffic to base station using a RF relay. Associated challenges such as maximizing the throughput by selective transmission power have also been simulated to reflect the spectrum efficiency of hybrid networks [35].…”
