On the Absorption Law for Slow Neutrons

Abstract: on the basis of a simple model for the neutron-nucleus interaction (deep potential hole of radius of the order of magnitude of the nuclear radius) shows that, whatever the absolute value of the capture cross section may be, it must be inversely proportional to the velocity of the neutron. This statement can be expressed in other words by saying that the probability of absorption of a slow neutron depends only upon the time which the neutron spends in the material. However, phenomena of selective absorption obse… Show more

“…In our case only states with the same magnetic quantum number can interact so that a complete specification of the states is obtained through their energy. Solutions of (20) in which all quantities vary as exp{−2πi(ν 0 − iγ)t} correspond as closely as possible to the notion of a stationary state decaying under influence of radiation damping. From (20) one obtains…”

“…Previous to these electrical methods a mechanical velocity selector had been used to investigate the neutron distribution from paraffin 5 and the rotating wheel method for checking a l/v absorption law had been applied to boron, cadmium, and silver. 6 The velocity distribution of slow neutrons yon College took many of the first photographs made on the mountain. Two Kenyon students, Richard W. Penn and Henry Meyers, each gave a summer of work on Mt.…”

“…The cross-section for a neutron capture by a particular nucleus appears to be a function both of the energy of the neutron and the nature of the nucleus (56,58,59,60,61). According to Moon and Tilman (60), "a considerable proportion of the neutrons traversing the wax and effective in producing radioactivity in silver had velocities at least comparable with those of thermal agitation."…”
