Contrairement à la plupart des commentateurs qui soulignent la modernité de Cantillon, cet article le perçoit comme un théoricien prémoderne. Selon l’article, l’ Essai de Cantillon reformule la cause populationniste en tant que pur problème d’allocation, ses éléments incontestablement modernes servant de dispositifs soit pour poser ce problème, soit pour le résoudre. Puisque ce problème repose sur le postulat d’une absence complète de progrès technique, il aboutit par conséquent à une conception typiquement prémoderne de l’histoire. Tandis que les lectures ‘modernisantes’ de l’ Essai ont tendance à mettre en avant la continuité entre Cantillon et les physiocrates, la lecture ‘historicisante’ proposée ici permet de déceler une profonde rupture.
