On Securing Underwater Acoustic Networks: A Survey

Abstract: Underwater acoustic networks (UWANs) are often deployed in unattended and untransparent or even hostile environments and face many security threats, while many applications based on UWANs require secure communication, such as costal defense, submarine communication and harbor security. Peculiar features of UWANs such as very constrained resources pose big challenges in defending UWANs against security threats, and many research results are published to address these issues along with several brief surveys avai… Show more

“…With fixed receive beamformers, the QoS problem is recast to a semi-definite program (SDP) problem by introducing slack variables. The convergence and robustness of the proposed scheme are demonstrated by simulation, indicating potential applications in the future wireless networks such as the device-to-device communications [10], [11] and the underwater acoustic networks [12].…”

“…Transient Internet users and mobile BSs (e.g., on-board BSs) make network security and mobility management very difficult. There are also many challenging issues for underwater networking, such as MAC protocols [68], routing protocols [69], end-to-end reliability control [70] and network security [74] for UANs. These issues have been discussed in the literature and are ignored here.…”

“…Related research has been presented for UWSNs in recent years [ 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 ]. Unfortunately, the existing cryptography and key management mechanisms are suffering from some problems, including cipher text expansion and computational complexity.…”
