On Routing for Multiple Description Video Over Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: We study the problem of multipath routing for double description (DD) video in wireless ad hoc networks. We follow an application-centric cross-layer approach and formulate an optimal routing problem that minimizes the application layer video distortion. We show that the optimization problem has a highly complex objective function and an exact analytic solution is not obtainable. However, we find that a meta-heuristic approach such as genetic algorithms (GAs) is eminently effective in addressing this type of c… Show more

“…But using little timeout values to avoid stale paths can bound the benefit of using multiple paths. From [16], it is observed that AOMDV outperforms SMR in many aspects like less control overhead, less end to end delay and good packet delivery ratio. So AOMDV is chosen in this work for routing aware purpose.…”

“…Multicast is an essential technology for many applications such as video distribution and group video conferencing, and results in bandwidth and power savings as compared to multiple unicast sessions. Many researches over the last several years have focused on unicast and multicast video transmission over wireless ad hoc networks (Wei & Zakhor, 2007;Agrawal et al, 2006;Chow & Ishii, 2008;Mao, Hou, Cheng, Sherali, Midkiff & Zhang, 2006;Mao et al, 2003). The main objective of these researches is to improve the quality of the received video by exploiting the error resilience properties of MDC along with multiple paths.…”

“…Such capability gives GA the unique strength in identifying promising regions of search space, rather than getting trapped in local optimum. A GA-based approach [4] represents a chromosome as a path, which consists of a sequence of genes (nodes). At each iteration a number of genetic operators are applied to the current individuals to generate individuals for the next generation.…”
