On prioritising global health’s triple crisis of sepsis, COVID-19 and antimicrobial resistance: a mixed-methods study from Malawi

Abstract: Sepsis causes 20% of global deaths, particularly among children and vulnerable populations living in developing countries. This study investigated how sepsis is prioritised in Malawi’s health system to inform health policy. In this mixed-methods study, twenty multisectoral stakeholders were qualitatively interviewed and asked to quantitatively rate the likelihood of sepsis-related medium-term policy outcomes being realised. Respondents indicated that sepsis is not prioritised in Malawi due to a lack of local s… Show more

“…This situation can cause organ damage, organ failure, and even mortality in patients ( 2 ). Sepsis is a significant global health problem, with high mortality rates worldwide ( 3 , 4 ). Although many factors can influence the development of sepsis and patient outcomes, recent studies have shown that genetic polymorphisms in the immune system and vitamin D metabolism can contribute to the variability of patient response to sepsis ( 5 , 6 ).…”

“…Fascinatingly, the percentage change in neonatal sepsis rates varies by transition point, varying across distinct time segments due to various reasons [ 13 , 19 ]. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, has had severe and far-reaching repercussions for health systems, strained families and communities [ 20 ], and impeded joint neonatal action plans [ 21 ]. It has then decreased the utilization of basic maternal, neonatal, and children’s health care services [ 22 ] and poignantly sparked a new normal for neonatal mortality in developing countries [ 2 , 22 , 23 ].…”
