On Nyetnops, a New Genus of the Spider Subfamily Nopinae (Araneae, Caponiidae) from Brazil

Abstract: A new caponiid genus, Nyetnops, is described to contain a remarkable new species, N. guarani from Brazil. These spiders, which have a bizarrely elongated male palp, have the subsegmented tarsi typical of the Nopinae, but lack the additional leg modifications found in those taxa. They may therefore represent the sister group of the other described nopine genera.

“…The family was divided into two subfamilies by Petrunkevitch (1939): Nopinae includes genera with sub-segmented tarsi and Caponinae includes genera with entire tarsi. However, based on current data, only Nopinae could be monophyletic (Platnick 1995; Platnick and Lise 2007), whereas those genera with entire tarsi (non-nopine) may form a basal and paraphyletic group (Platnick 1994a; Kranz-Baltensperger et al 2009). Although some of these genera seem to be more closely related each other than with the Nopinae (Platnick and Jäger 2008).…”

“…The phylogenetic relationships of Caponiidae are unknown, although some studies have inferred the relationship of certain genera of the family (Platnick 1993; Platnick 1994a, b; Platnick and Jager 2008; Platnick and Lise 2007). A study including all genera of the family is being prepared by the authors, and the discussion here is premature.…”
